New to the talkbeer forums, but looking forward to becoming a contributing member. I live in SF and have loved (not just liked) beer since 1998, when I spent a summer behind the taps at a Biergarten in Walldorf Germany (outside Frankfurt), called Der Gundhof (hence, my username). These days, I really enjoy Sours and Saisons, but will try just about anything once. Locally, my go-tos are Rare Barrel, Cellarmaker and City Beer Store, and I wish SARA was closer. Talk to me!

I believe defining what a dumpling is limits its possibilities. Nobody puts dumpling in a corner. A dumpling can take on many different variations...beyond the myriad served at Dim Sum. A knodel? Dumpling. A piroshki? Probably a dumpling. Pig in a blanket? Arguably a g-d dumpling. I'm sorry, but I cannot, in good conscious, tell the world what a dumpling is. Dumpling is in the eye of the beholder.

Terrible. Steamed or boiled is the defining attribute. Would you call a Calzone a dumpling?

If you need the rules, then see this definition via Wikipedia:

Dumpling is a broad classification for a dish that consists of small pieces of dough (made from a variety of starch sources) wrapped around a filling. The dough can be based on bread, flour, or potatoes, and may be filled with meat, fish, cheese, vegetables, fruits, or sweets. Dumplings may be prepared using a variety of methods, including baking, boiling, frying, simmering, or steaming.

    Wikipedia- lol.

I vaguely see that as a valid citation and raise you Merriam-Webster which states:

    dumpling
    noun dump·ling \ ˈdəmp-liŋ \

    Size matters.

You wouldn’t call a hot pocket a calzone would you?

I think it depends on the size. I’ve had some chimichangas that were the size of a SF burrito, but the ones my mom made were no bigger than a blintz.
