I know there is a good number of Trolls, Sconnies, and FIB's that like to get away from the concrete jungle and venture into Michigan's Yoop. There is good beer here, unfortunately they are fairly spaced out. He's a run down of what you can find based on vacationing region!

Eastern U.P.
Breweries:
Soo Brewing Company
- No bottles, just growler fills. Cheap fills too (clear growlers, argh). http://www.soobrew.com/ Sault Ste. Marie, MI
Tahquamanon Falls Brewery and Pub - Again, no bottles, just growlers. Serves food. Paradise, MI
http://www.tahquamenonfallsbrewery.com/ Paradise, MI
Lake Superior Brewing Co - No bottles, just growler fills. Serves food.

Black Rocks Brewery - Small brewpub in an older house downtown Marquette. Bigger production facility offsite. No food, but can bring in food. Music quite often.

http://www.countryvillageresort.com/httpdocs/html/brewery.html Ishpeming, MI
Hereford and Hops - Central U.P., but south of Marquette about 65 minutes. Serves good food, growlers only. http://www.herefordandhops.com/ Escanaba, MI

Beer-centric bars/bottle shops
Northland Pub
- Located inside the Landmark Inn (nice place to stay). 14 taps, rotating good craft.
http://thelandmarkinn.com/dining-entertainment/northland-pub/ Marquette, MI
Wild Rover - Now, I hesitate to add this (Personal opinions aside). Go during day for beer, booty shaking by night. 20 taps or so, with the best selection in Marquette.
http://wildrovermqt.com/
White's Party Store - Very solid bottle shop in Marquette. Jamie does a great job, and is very personable. Also sells homebrew supplies.
http://whitespartystore.com/
Superior Blue Link Party Store - Just down the stop from White's, sometimes a bit less picked over.
Save-Mor IGA Foodliner - Great selection inside a grocery store, not far from H&H in Escanaba.

Western U.P.
Breweries:
Library Brewpub and Restaurant
- Quite a few taps, with 8-10 house brews. Beer is solid. Also serves other beer on tap. Serves good food.
http://www.librarybrewpub.com/ Houghton, MI
Keweenaw Brewing Company - Does not serve food. 10 taps. Allowed to bring in outside food. Growlers and cans available. http://www.keweenawbrewing.com/ Houghton, MI

BrickSide Brewery - Small 3 barrel system located at the end of the road in Copper Harbor. Real good beer, no food. Bombers and growlers available. Can bring in outside food. http://bricksidebrewery.com/

Beercentric bars/bottle shops
Keweenaw Co-Op
- Noah has done a great job bringing in some really nice beers. Best bottle selection in U.P., but not all are kept cold. Check bottle dating if possible. http://www.keweenaw.coop/ Hancock, MI
Fitzgerald's Hotel and Restaurant - Small restaurant with 10 taps and beer engine. 100 bottles, plus 100 whiskies. (I'm the owner, feel free to contact me). Serves food.
http://www.eagleriverinn.com Eagle River, MI
Shutes Saloon - Great old style prohibition era bar. 65 bottles and four taps. Calumet, MI

If I missed anything, feel free to add it! There will be some more things coming online within the next year or so. I know there will be a new brewery in Ishpeming soon, as well as one in downtown Calumet.
Doesn't sound like Upper Hand Brewing will have a tap room, so I'll leave that off.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about whats available at the moment on the shelves, or at some of these places, I try to keep a pretty good pulse on the U.P. scene.
Here is a link to a Google map of the above listed sites!

I love the UP. I stayed at the Eagle River Inn and ate/drank at the restaurant. Awesome spot. Watched the sun set on the lake from the deck.

How long ago was that? If it was within the last seven years, I was most likely behind the bar...We probably chatted.

What's the distribution like up there? What brands are available?

Short's. Do you need anything else?

Stayed at the Eagle River Inn last year with a few friends....had a blast!!! Good company, awesome food, ridiculous beer and booze selection! My party and I felt like we were treated like royalty, already planning for our vacation UP there this year. Keweenaw Co-Op is a must stop if headed up there, they also have a bunch of home-brewing supplies IIRC.

I can vouch for all the places Marc has listed in the Western U.P., all solid stops! Brickside is definitely worth the cruise up to Copper Harbor, don't miss stopping at Jampot on 26 and getting some fresh baked goods or homemade jams from the monks. (they love to add booze to EVERYTHING!!!) I might add that no trip to the Yoop is complete until you have stopped at Henry's in Rockland on a Wednesday night for the pizza.

Can't wait to get UP there ASAP.

Highly encourage anyone with some time on their hands to make the trek to the Keweenaw. The recently renovated Eagle River Inn/The Fitz is a great base camp. MarCat is too humble to toot his own horn, but the place that he and Mike run is unmatched (location + beer + food + chatty bearded bartenders) anywhere in Michigan. I've been making the trip every year for the last 15 years, and it really is the high point of my year. Don't be a raymo, just go.

MarcatGSB When is that music fest up by you? Think i'm going to try and book around then. If the snow at Eagle River Inn has melted by summer ;)

Looks like August 1 - 3rd this year.
Some great bands are coming, that's for sure. Kansas Bible Co freaking rocks, huge band with tons of horns and two or three drummers. I know Josh Davis is coming back up, either solo or with Steppin' In It, also sounds like Breathe Owl Breathe and Seth and May will be there again this year.
We'll do our little shindig at The Fitz the Thursday before, so July 31st.

Ahh excellent!
Where you coming from? Anything you are looking for specifically in Michigan I could try and have on tap?

Wow, nice of you to offer.I am from NE Indiana, so we get most of the Southern MI beers. Shorts and Right Brain are two breweries I would like to try more of, but we are going to hit Shorts on the way up. You really dont have to do anything special for me, although my wife is a mead lover. Its mostly IPA or DIPA for me these days, but I enjoy most anything. We are coming up the first week of June (room 201), if you want anything from down this way, just let me know. I would be glad to bring some stuff along for you. Thanks again.

BBTW, looking forward to seeing the newly remodeled Inn, we stayed there once before, but it was under the previous ownership.

I'll be sure to have some nice B. Nektar sixtel on tap for when you arrive, gotta keep the wife happy! As for you, since you're digging the IPA's and such, I'll wait till we get closer and see what's fresh! I'm sure Short's will have some nice IPA out by then.
That's a great time to come, beautiful weather, not as many people out! And you picked the best room!
Thank you for the offer, I'll be in touch!

MarcatGSB Did you guys update your website? It looks way more detailed, but my memory is fuzzy. Nonetheless, looking at coming up late June/ early July. Any weekend better than another?
Yah, new website shortly after you were there last year.

The 3rd of July we have a huge Short's tap takeover every year, and it continues the 4th. The hotel is booked the fourth, but I don't think it is the third.
Camping is allowed on the beach on the fourth if you wanted to say for the festivities. 3 or 4 bands on the fourth, couple tiki bars, 15 Shorts on tap, and $3,000 worth of fireworks. Great party.

Damn, the Short's taps alone is worth coming up and then add everything on top + good food and good company!!! I am already committed to a family gathering for the holiday, otherwise my ass would be planted in a tent on the beach. I think we are going to aim for the 3rd weekend in July, I forgot about some other engagements for late June. Should be booking a room soon.

I think next year I am going to plan on being up there for the 4th!!!

Since this thread doesn't have enough Fitzgerald's Hotel and Restaurant praise, I'll add some. Four nights in July. Wonderful food, drinks, room, service, and atmosphere. Thanks again, Marc!

I'll get more pics once I upload the rest. Happy to tell anyone I know about this place.

Just because I like to pile on to all the praise of MarCat, Mike, and the Fitz in general, here is a nice thrillist list of the 10 Best Bars Outside of Detroit. Some usual suspects are included like Hopcat, 7Monks, Crunchy's, and....wait...what's that last place included on the list? Damn straight it's the Fitz.

And for very good reason. Marc, Mike, and crew are doing some phenomenal things in an amazing area!!!

Here's a few pics I have taken up there (which barely scratch the surface!)

View of the "side yard"-

View off the back deck-

View from our bedroom-

Lastly, Marc and the smoker-

Might have some BBPT5th on still...

Not directly related, but kinda related since it's in the UP, but is anyone heading to the UP Fall Beerfest in Marquette? This will be my first. Heading up with some friends on Friday and staying until Monday. I hear it's way more laid back then the winter beerfest, which I've been to all but one.

The Fall Beerfest in Marquette is hands down the best beer fest. I love the Winter Fest, but it's much less people (3500) this year, as opposed to 3,000 the last few...It's on the water, and the brewers love it. It's an actual vacation for them!

Enjoy!

Wow, well that was a trip. I agree MarcatGSB , UP Beerfest is something special. The location, the weather, the attitude, all unique. It was busy though, but I got in at noon with the VIPs. I went up with a couple friends and on Sunday made the drive all the way up to Copper Harbor to check out Brickside (great little place), then drove up to Brockway Mountain and got to see this..

We're gonna make it a week long trip next year.

Oh I wanted to trust me, but I was with others who were itching to get back to Marquette. We met up with a gent from Ore Dock at Keweenaw Brewing (Joe?) that was also heading up, and hitting all the same breweries on the way. Pretty sure he said that his final stop was to drop some beer off at your place. I'll be bringing the wife next year, and it will be a week long trip. We'll likely plan for at least one night at the Eagle.

Legit excuse! Haha, good to hear man. Yah, Joe T, baby blue eyes with a million dollar smile?

When should we do this Talk Beer weekend at The Fitz?, serious question.

I have a four year vertical of BCBS starting in 11, Vanilla, Coffee, and BW 1/6th barrels and a quarter of CBS (among other things). I want to share them with all of you.
Probably won't crack all of these for the weekend, but would either do the A) Vertical B)Variants C)CBS/KBS/Backwoods and some sort of other surprises.
Thoughts, concerns, what weekends work best, who's interested, music, Thursday-Sun, Fri-Mon, what what?

In my mind, we pick a weekend, On Thursday shut the dining room down after like 7 o clock, put out a bunch of smoked meats, have someone play some music for us, and drink till the wee hours. Keep the beers on tap all weekend for everyone to enjoy, but still open the restaurant for normal service. We have 12 rooms...each with two beds. So all couples it would 24, couples and friends we could do around 36, if we packed four into every room it'd be 48. So plenty of beer.
