Fuck. There are two 6-7 week old feral kittens across the street. This one is separated from its mom, who is around the side of this house. Tried to go grab it, but it took off. Need to try to figure out how to grab it and the other one & hopefully take them to the humane society. Ideas? This is killing me, but I also don't want to end up with 5 cats by the end of the day.

    Um. Why not?

Get box_social to help you and send him home with three. Kinda srs.

Also srs, I will ask my friend for advice. She runs the rescue group here and is an expert at cat whispering the ferals.

On a serious note, coach , I had a similar situation many years ago growing up in rural PA. We used an existing cat carrier we had and put some milk in it (I think that's what we put in it), then let it sit in the yard just off of the porch. We caught each of the kittens separately by watching them walk in, then sneaking up on the carrier and closing the door. We took them to a no-kill shelter the same night where they were bottle fed and eventually adopted out.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen the kittens again since Saturday. There are raccoons around (they killed one of my chickens a couple weeks ago), so I'm hoping the kittens didn't meet the same fate. I saw the mom today, so I'm not hopeful, but I'll keep an eye out.

The humane society here is a pain in the ass. They have "surrender" hours every day from 2:45-3:30, but they said to get there by 1:30 to have a "chance" to surrender the cats. They didn't have an answer for "WTF do I do with them if you won't/can't take them?" They also have to be weaned and friendly, otherwise they will only do trap & release, which isn't an option for six week old kittens, IMO. Plus, they don't answer the phone. You have to leave a message and hope they call you back -- between Thursday and Monday only. There's another really rough looking cat that probably needs to be euthanized, but they couldn't answer my questions about that on Saturday & told me to call back today. So I did. And they didn't call me back. So I guess I'm waiting until Thursday now. Looks like I'm just going to have to start running a clandestine cat shelter out of my garage...

    Goddamn it.

Got to-be other rescue options? Surely?
They sound awful. Maybe another local option that is actually humane and willing to help. I hate ‘nextdoor’ but maybe try that or Some Local facebook groups?

Everything else made me sad. I agree with Rob, maybe there are some local (or local-ish) groups who could help, but as of right now I trust you the most.

Maybe leftoverburrito wants a pal for his cat! I know you probably got him a wedding gift already but.... ;)

Mood lightener: Here are the Goobers I didn't post yesterday.

...Seriously coach, I hope things work out. If we can somehow help in any way, let us know.

Figured I should update. I haven't seen the kittens again since my last post a few weeks ago. Hoping someone took them to a good home. I'll just assume that's what happened because the other option is not fun to think about.

As a result of that, I had my first appointment for a trap & release this morning, but of course didn't catch a damn cat. Going to try to reschedule and hope for a better result next time.

To not make this a total downer post, here are my cats!

We actually rescued Marty as a six week old kitten from the same house where I saw the other kittens. My friend also has one she rescued from there that was on death's door. He's totally fine now, and a total adventure cat. This is Lux:
