so i like games. i grew up playing video games and still occasionally fire up the ps3. however, i've discovered a vast world of killer board games that go way beyond that one time you played risk and flipped the board in a rage or the time your brother decided to not trade you illinois avenue so you could complete your red coloured monopoly.

my personal fave is a rpg called 'arkham horror' in which you play a team of 'investigators' that are combatting an evil demon thing called an ancient one. it's a brutal, fun game that has a lot of strategy but also a lot of luck but a solid theme. it's fiddly, but for the right crowd, it's a lot of fun.

anyway, what games have you all played? any really cool shit i've been missing out on? i haven't seen a board game thread yet, but i figure this is as good a time as any to start one...

Arkham Horror is my favorite game. I have the first 5 expansions and love it. The only reason I haven't gotten all 8 is it is pretty cost prohibitive but eventually I'll complete the whole set. I could talk about AH forever, I'll probably just pm you haha.

i'm actually one away from owning them all (the only one i don't have is miskatonic). i haven't come close to playing them all though; it's hard to get a group together that wants to play a 4+ hour game. actually finished a base game + lurker at the threshold solo game tonight that i totally dominated; last couple games i played i got beat pretty badly in base game + dunwich.

Still bust dnd almost every Thursday night. The 5.0 is a step above. Often play carcasonne, talisman, catan. I play a bit of chess but go is my forte.

Never heard of AH. Will check out.

i drunkenly bought catan after i went to a bar for a trade, but haven't gotten a chance to play it yet. i did get to play terra mystica over xmas which a lot of people say is catan but better, and i thought it was awesome. you play as different races and build an empire in a manner that my more board-game-experienced brother says is catan on steroids.

Imagine the song for the Crossfire board game.

Now try to get it out of your head.

For those of you who haven't played AH here is one of my games, this is with 3 of the 8 expansions added in. There's 2 more boards if you play the whole thing...

    Looks way too complicated.

I still like to drink whiskey and play Mouse Trap. wouldreccommend/10.

Is there a simpler Arkham game? I've played one, but don't remember it being so elaborate.

Only game owned is Dominion, but need to get Elfenland and never do. Have several friends with game hoards. Puerto Rico is fun although I am terrible at it. Agricola is a good one, too. Off the top of my head, I can't think of other good ones not mentioned already.

Elder Sign is a smaller version of Arkham, that might have been it.

i think you're thinking of eldritch horror, though i've never played either that or elder sign. arkham's actual gameplay is not that complicated, but there's a whole lot of setup and a lot to keep track of and it can easily overwhelm.

also, huge fan of dominion. it's the game that gets played in my group far more than any other. i've learned to dread scrying pool appearing in the kingdom because one guy in the group always buys it and always dominates using it despite our best efforts...

Oh fuck yeah. Love me some board games. Off the top of my head some of the more beloved games in the home:

    • Dutch Blitz - a quick card game with up to four players similar to a game called speed
    • Scrabble - marriage was built on this game
    • Dominion - been digging this one a ton lately. For those that haven't played, it's an inventory type card game with multiple interchangeable variables, so the base game is a good investment for those that learn to master games quickly as you can modify quite a bit to even the tables
    • Settlers of Catan - got the 5-6 player and seafarer expansions. Usually do a "Settler's and Swill" night with my homebrew group about once a month. JoeLikesBeer I think has made it once.
    • Guillotine - Okay card game - inventory type as well
    • Carcassone - not really my gig, but I think that's because I always just play with the wife and that's boring to me
    • Bezzer Wizzer - fun trivia game for couples
    • Skip Bo - this game has gotten plenty of play while wasted or involved in a good conversation
    • Casino Yahtzee - This game is vintage. Don't think they have made it since the mid-80's. Good game
    • Real People - Man, this game is legit. Apparently in the late 80's Mattel (I think it was) did interviews with real people and took their pictures. Did a ten question survey on stuff like: job, secret fantasy, nickname, 3 words to describe, etc. You take their pictures, learn the answers from one person and try to guess who it is. Basically it's prejudice training at its finest.
    • Liverpool rummy - A variation on rummy that is really fun. Kinda a different type of Phase 10 (which sucks)
    • Dominos - not fucking Mexican Train. Legit bones.

Game I have and wish I could find enough people to play with: Axis and Allies.

Coup is a fun quick deception game by the same people as Resistance and imho is vastly superior. I just bought Black Fleet which is pretty fun although a little simpler. Spyrium is a great game. Citadels (as with most fantasy flight games) is fun. King of New York is a great improvement on King of Tokyo which is a easy fun game.

I was a 2200+ rated chess player at one point but haven't really played in years. I do have a million MTG cards from way back as well but haven't played that either in forever. I play cards at times though, especially drinking games.
