Each Wednesday (typically) we'll introduce a new year from 1958 through 2017. Each member selects an album released in that year with a few lines (or more) on why you picked it/enjoy it. Your selection does not have to be the most important release or the most admired release of that year (though it certainly can be), simply an album that grabs you and that you really love.

However, once an album is selected by a member, you must choose a different album.

Together we will compile quite the canon of "Great Music" and, who knows, maybe inspire each other to check out some new artists (or to revisit old forgotten classics).

This week - the albums of 2017

    Honorable mentions begin on Monday

No placeholders. You must post the artist and title followed by the album cover. You may edit your post to include a write-up or videos.

Here is a list of the top albums per Rate Your Music, which is the source I will use to determine an albums release date.

I was really surprised when I heard one of the songs form this album about how much I enjoyed it.

Couple of really great tracks on this CD, easily my favorite release by any of the Gallagher brothers, which is weird, as his brother put out his best work this year also.

I had a lot of concerns about this, being a comeback album and all. But James Murphy & co. picked right up where they left off. Groovy & danceable, but also sometimes melancholy and "older."

It takes a lot for me to like a new hip hop album. Or newer music in general. But this is a banger.

Chris Stapleton - From a Room Volume 2

I like both albums he released this year but I dig this one a bit more.

Greta Van Fleet- From the Fires

Led Zeppelin is the obvious comparison, but they definitely have an old school sound despite being like 20 years old.

This may be the most obvious winner of any year. So good.

    Edit :

This needs to be on the mix tape for the year sorry leftoverburrito not meaning to steal your thunder

Terrific songs, outstanding musicianship. A very "professional" sounding record, if that makes any sort of sense.

I still like Southeastern the most of anything Isbell has done, but there's certainly enough here to keep me interested.

And I'm going to cheat a little and post the link to their Tiny Desk performance, because it's outfuckingstanding

If you like good songs played by people who know how to play, you'll like this record.

I hadn't been paying attention to anything new in music for a long time.

This album blew me away. These guys must have been listening to a bunch of Sleep and Sabbath and just went with it, but their own way.

It got me back into music and for that I am grateful.

Solid record and definitely need to have cruise control on when driving with this one.

Lots of great tracks, not too many great albums but this one blew me away:

White Reaper - The World’s Best American Band
Exuberant garage glam that doesn’t shy away from guitar solos and keyboards.

This is a pretty goddamn deep year. I've been wavering on this one, but should have a lot for the Honorable Mentions. Or maybe it's just deep because a lot of this stuff is recent, and therefore in my current shuffle?

Anyway, I decided to go with this pretty baby:

After expanding his sound with each passing album, Sam Beam decided to bring it back on this one. He took a step back, and in doing so created an album that can be argued as his best.

This also came out when my 3 month old colic-y baby was at his absolute horrendous worst, so it was a great soundtrack for my two hours of sleep per night.

I think I like this one better than Brill Bruisers, although there are no Bejar songs (which is a negative for me, maybe a positive for some, hah). I really like the songs better than BB, but they're especially interesting given that many of the songs were written during and influenced by the the 2016 election (before and after). I also love the spare (for NP) sound, and Newman's guitar tone on this one in particular:

2017 was the first year since probably 2008 that I had been paying attention to any new music. So it was complete music overload for me. I had to discover what came out this year as well as filling in the gap from '08-'17. I dove in deep and there are a lot of choices that I can pick so watch out for runner up spam, but I have to go with...

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Flying Microtonal Banana
    [IMG]

First of all, the band name.

Secondly, I had heard Nuclear Fusion in passing and decided that it was the grooviest, most outside the box shit I had heard in a long time, the rhythm and bass in this song is just addictive...couldn't stop listening to that jam over and over again for weeks. The album dropped and it was more of the same...did not disappoint. It's a concept album - Stu bought a guitar custom made for microtonal tuning (look it up) and the rest of the band followed suit and so the whole album was written that way. Gives it a sort of Middle-Eastern vibe. Anyway, this sent me down a monster King Gizz rabbit role and also re-introduced me to one of my fave genres of music - psych - and that in turn led me to discovering an entire wealth of newish rog/psych/garage stuff that I've been obsessed with ever since.

Oh...and this was one of FIVE albums released by this band this year, so you can expect the other four when runner ups are allowed assuming no one picks any of them.
