Hey fellow BTers / TBers or whatever, I'm headed to the Phoenix area & I'm wondering what bottle shops I should stop at &/or beer bars or breweries...any help?

Tempe: Taste of Tops/Tops Liquors
Scottsdale: Papago Brewing
Chandler: Whole Foods (20+ taps)
Phoenix: Angels Trumpet (haven't been but have heard good things)

Thanks, just stopped at the WF in Chandler & they had a pretty good selection (Grassroots, Crooked Stave, FW, etc). Think I'm gonna hit Four Peaks for some fresh Hop Knot & Papago later in the week.

to drink:

Go to Flanny's and Tops and Boulders in Tempe
Angels Trumpet and the Attic in downtown PHX

for bottles:

Gilbert Convenient Mart (Gilbert) an Sun Devil Liquors (Mesa)

How long you in town fer, pardner?

semi-protip: Skip Four Peaks main location and go to the one on Wilson street in Tempe (they more often have the barrel aged and double versions of stuff)

protip: skip Four Peaks altogether and got o FATE brewing in Scottsdale

Flying in tonight!

Any more heads up/pro tips? Going to Royals/Angels game tomorrow in Surprise. Is Angels Trumpet something that you can get dinner at? Need to make dinner plans to meet up w/ my bro somewhere tomorrow night in PHX. I'll be the dude in the powder blue Bo Jackson jerz/KC hat.

Spending Friday in Tucson. Tank top day. Oscar Robertson or Jordan.

Marquette tailgate on Saturday. Brewers/Angels. Robin Yount Brewers Road jerz. Or maybe a Lazar Hayward Marquette jerz if its too hot. Brewers hat fo sho.

Tell me more of this Fate brewing, never heard of either. What CS was at WF Chandler?

Definitely hitting Sun Devil/Tops as always. Gonna try and avoid Papago unless they have something can't miss.

Haves no idea what we're doing on Sunday. Wide open.

I'm headed to Phoenix for Monday night only. Has anything changed in the above recommended places?

Yeah...kind of a lot...

In the last two years a sea change has occurred in the AZ beer scene. The number of new breweries that distribute here, the number of places that suddenly seemed to have found craft beer, and the number of new beer-centric pubs that have opens have made it:
(1) easier to get a decent beer in many places
(2) much harder to find where best stuff is likely to be (it used to be restricted to about 5 or 6 places almost exclusively.
Some specific changes worth of note to beer shoppers/drinkers in PHX:

Arizona Wilderness Brewing has begun living up to its hype and is now certainly the one must not miss brewery in Arizona
• There are now several good options on the west side of Phoenix
for example:
Ground Control beer, wine, coffee. Often gets good beer events. http://www.groundxcontrol.com/
Gilbert Convenient Mart has become one of the best bottle shops fro craft beer
• The airport now has several places with decent beer

The Attic has emerged as the best craft beer bar in Arizona (well ‘cept for 1702 in Tucson) https://www.facebook.com/theattic4247 But they annoyingly use facebook instead of their own webpage…
FATE Brewing continues to impress but call/check ahead if the stouts aren't on draft don't bother unless you are nearby http://www.fatebrewing.com/
Cartel Coffee Lab is now brewing several different beers consistently and they're all good. 5 or 6? Locations now…Plus you know, coffee. http://www.cartelcoffeelab.com/
North Mountain Brewing opened http://www.northmountainbrewing.com
Uncle Bears Brewing is now getting some deserved attention for ther DIPA at least
http://ubbeer.com/
The Lost Leaf, once a solid option downtown has gone way down hill. Serving old beer with a reduced selection and bartenders who don’t have any idea what beer is. Clientèle has changed as well...

This hasn't changed (italics indicates my editorial comment):

Tempe: Taste of Tops/Tops Liquors bar is great; shop sells out of everything fast, multiple cicerones on staff
Scottsdale: Papago Brewing still a great place to have a drink, skip the food. Good bottles to go. http://papagobrewing.com/
Chandler: Whole Foods (20+ taps) Great but it’s in a grocery store closes early. Great bottle selection though among the best in the state. Only one of two places to get BC variants this year for example…I know but this is AZ, not Oregon or Colorado
Phoenix: Angels Trumpet http://www.angelstrumpetalehouse.com/Angels_Trumpet/ATAH.html
best place downtown besides The Attic. Its across the street from FilmBar!

Other Considerations:
A good number of decent places in PHX actually use Taphunter now!

OHSO - In East Phoenix not too far from The Attic. Their own beers are decent and they have good food a pretty diverse draftlist. great patios space too.
http://ohsobrewery.com/

The Perch -In Chandler -Now brewing their own and is a very exotic atmosphere. Lots of birds (srs)
http://perchpubbrewery.com/

Flanny's -In Tempe. good selection decent food . in a square neighborhood. draft list usually update online

Copper Blues - Downtown Phoenix a pretty *****ey corporate live music venue that actually has liek 60 handles and bottles if you downtown and it isnt crowded it might eb okay for a pint http://www.copperblueslive.com/

World of Beer -In Tempe it is what is it and this one in practically on the ASU campus but the draftlist is often very solid. one of their bartender writes beer reviews for PHX New Times. Go early to avoid college crowds

World of Beer -In Gilbert..not far if you went to AZ Wilderness

Brass Tap -In Mesa like a smaller World of Beer. Not great but 60 handles most in that area

Handlebar -In Tempe a fake dive bar one block from World of Beer sometimes has great taps

Sun Devil Liquors -In Mesa tiny cellar bar frequented by mostly hard core beer people. Huge bottle selection upstairs. Small allocation/seasonal/special releases sometimes linger here longer than elsewhere in PHX.

Yucca Tap Room- In Tempe usually overlooked by TB-ers/BAs/RB-ians... etc . A dive with nightly live music on one side and 40 handles and ~200 bottles on the other plus a huge whiskey selection. Website is horribly inconsistently updated but they use taphunter. Expect savage bouncers in the evening. Go early to avoid kids/noise/crowds. http://yuccatap.com/

Moto -In Phoenix. A gastropub that centers on Japanese food and sushi. Not many beers but always good. http://www.mrmotorising.com/

The Main Ingredient -In Phoenix a tiny gastropub with a nice patio. http://tmialehouse.com/

Sun Up Brewing -In downtown Phoenix. An often overlooked small, solid brewery with a unique layout and very relaxed atmosphere. http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2513/

Boulders (on Broadway and now on Southern and also Spokes on Southern) three locations in Tempe and Mesa of beer centric neighborhood bars. The original, Boulders on Broadway has the best beer and most relaxed atmosphere but the others are pretty good too.

It is worth noting and often unappreciated by non Arizonans that Phoenix metro area is huge. I take issue with the way the US Census measure the metro area..they divide into three (which are essential contiguous) ranking PHX metro as 12th largest in the US when by my calculations it should be like 7th ....anyway… Driving around or taking the (limited) public transit (we do have a train now that connects many good beer places) is a serious consideration.

this is cute:

I'm working on Monday but if you re anywhere near my part of town (tempe) and the timing works out I'll buy you a beer somewhere

That place was packed. Unreal packed for a Monday night. Good for them. The ipa kicked and we wanted food so headed to world of beer in gilbert. Drinking as many locals as possible.

In Phoenix for a week or so for Christmas. I had been to fate a couple times before, but last night was the first time I've been really impressed with something other than their candy bar stout. They've got a Nelson single hop pale on right now that's delicious, much better than their regular American pale ale. Gingerbread stout wasn't too shabby either. Also was at the whole foods on Scottsdale and mayo a couple days ago, what an awesome bar that is. Odell's creme brûlée porter kicked ass. Arizona beer scene is much better than I remember. The number of beer-centric restaurants (or average tap selection at any given restaurant) is better than I find in the Bay Area. I'm excited to check out arizona wilderness, any recommendations on best days to go?

We had no time to wait. Had tasters of a few beers, underwhelmed. Left San Diego late so that cut into drinking time in phoenix.

Bumping this since I am going to be in Tucson the 21st and 22nd of this month.

Anything not already mentioned, specifically in Tucson, I should hit up (Wednesday I'll have the most free time)?

Already planning on making my first ever go at In N Out Burger! So damn excited!

Any food that you think is a must eat in Tucson?

Lindy's on 4th. Stupid burgers.

This is a giant burger, between 2 grilled cheese sandwiches. It was magical

I second El Guero Canelo, and go to the one on Oracle if possible. There are other Sonoran-style dog places in town, but this is the best. Get the double - 2 hots dogs, 1 bun! :)

Thanks kmello69! El Guero Canelo is a definite tick! Hnnnngggg! And Lindy's has further complicated my eating plans. So much food and so little time.

Thanks for posting this.

I will be in town October 13-18. Any changes? Any tasting you know of? Wanna get beer and eat Pringles or hot dogs?

I'm in az for a few days, mostly Tucson, which city are you in?

Headed to Phoenix next week (Feb 18-19) for a short work trip; I'll be mainly in Scottsdale. Any new recommendations - food, beer, coffee?

I'm even thinking of driving up to Prescott to hit Superstition. Worth the 3+ hour roundtrip?

Keep an eye out for Mother Road Tower Station IPA while you're there. I was able to find ~2 week old cans at Total Wine when I was back in December. Also, if you're looking to try Superstition without driving out to Prescott, I'd recommend hitting up a few nearby Whole Foods. I was able to grab some of their bottles at the one on Mayo Blvd and Scottsdale Road. Depending on when you are in Scottsdale, I've always enjoyed beer/food combo at Brat Haus too. Enjoy the trip!

Thanks, appreciate the help on this. I'll probably look for the bottles at WF. Looks like the trip up north would be a few hours and pricey (they may be totally worth it but the Superstition bottle cost...whoa)

Check out Superstition's facebook as well, they'll sometimes post info on stores in greater Phoenix area that receive a shipment or whatnot. I think earlier this week there was something about Gilbert Convenience Mart getting some, but that's going to be a trek from Scottsdale.

I read through this thread again and would toss another vote in support of Angel's Trumpet. I checked it out on a trip a couple months ago and loved it. Great food and very well constructed tap list.

Heading back to Phoenix in May for a quick weekend, any idea how much distribution (if any) AZ Wilderness kegs see? Not sure I'll be able to make it out to the brewery, although getting some of those 32oz cans would probably make it worthwhile

What part of town you gonna be in? Craft 64 in Scottsdale has been getting kegs sometimes. The various OHSO locations are another possibility. Also, out on the west side, Ground Control. Not sure how regular any of this is, but they pop up from time to time.

I'll be North Phoenix, like 56th St and Bell primarily. I've uber'ed over to the OHSO on Pima before, that could definitely be a saturday night option. Thanks!

For sure, man. There's a new location at Tatum and Shea too, which just recently had AZW Granola Stout on. And, of course, that puts you not too far from the original Fate location @ Scottsdale and Shea.

Awesome, much appreciation for the tips! Don't think I'll make it to Fate this trip but hoping for a longer visit later in the summer.

Thumbs up for Beer Research Institute? Probably only have one night to go out. Would like to divide time between here and AZ Wilderness. Which one has the better grub?

Thanks,

former transplant that transplanted to CO

Visiting this weekend, does anyone know if AZ Wilderness still has cans of their berliner available? Also debating heading over Saturday morning for the other half collab, are their releases usually of the **** show variety?
