I'm not a big scotch buff, and I certainly don't know the difference between highland, lowland and islay (besides the obvious geographical differences), but recently I've had whiskey from Lagavulin and Caol Isla. (sp?) that were outstanding. I don't like Scotches that have a prominent iodine (medicinal phenolic) flavor.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this thread develops because I'd like to learn more.

Those are Islays. I tend to like those the most. Try Laphroaig 10.

Errrr, price point, availability? Obviously something worth seeing out cuz you took the time to mention it.
$65, somewhat hard to get, but available nationally. I like it.

While we're at it (at he cost of KDR), what's the deal with adding a few drops of water to scotch? Is it something that everyone does, or is it considered pretentious? Personally I like doing this with bourbon, but some of my bourbon drinking friends tell me it's a scotch thing.

That was the name of the other one I had. I think I enjoyed that one the most. Laphroig 10 was exactly what I had. It was really nice.

Now, you said, "Those are Islays," were you referring to the iodine flavor or the ones I mentioned? Caol Isla (I'm assuming it's an Islay) didn't have a noticeable iodine flavor and it was very smooth. I enjoyed it more than the others. edit: Aside from Laphroig.

I add a few drops to most scotchs. Anywhere from a single drop from a straw to a table spoon to some of the Cask Strength stuff. Some stuff I won't add any too but I will always to try a drink first without and then add a little if i think it needs it.

Laphroaig, Lagavulin, and Caoli Ila are Islays. There is no need to drink anything else. Add Ardbeg to your portfolio and rest assured you have experienced the best that scotch has to offer.

Islays are smokey, peaty, slightly sweet (and I find them to be a little briny, but that's just me). Those two are Islays. If you have a scotch and it's quite smoky, chances are that it's an Islay. It's the easiest region to identify.

I disagree. Those are all Great drinks but not the best scotch has to offer. I would recommend Highland Park and Beleivne Double Wood as MUST trys for anyone looking to get into scotch. I would even say Tasliker too.
