While we’re at it, I’d really like it if the embeds only embedded the tweet being linked to – currently, if that tweet is a reply to another tweet, embedding it will also embed the tweet it’s a reply to. If I need to get around that I use screenshots, but that’s kinda not ideal.

I like this feature, tbh.

That is probably more a Twitter thing than a TB thing, though.

This has been happening on other message boards I read for the past several days, so I'd say you're correct. May also be a Twitter/Xenforo compatibility issue (same reasoning).

Edit: I see you meant specifically the quote embedding part, but I'd say the general issue is related to something bigger than TB as well.

As if the Trump thread needed any less readability.

Let me figure out by context clues what this tweet probably said....

I have never heard of anyone putting a Twitter link in a forum. I know that only a certain amount of a link will usually shows. Now if it’s a copy and paste, the whole copy shows.

Tweets are displaying fine now, at least for me.
What have you done differently than you were doing before? Are the tweets you are linking shorter than the ones from before?

You can embed tweets in a post like any other media from Instagram or wherever. Most of them are not showing up at all, instead having a "Loading Tweet" message that you can click on, which will redirect you to the tweet.

The Trump thread is full of tweets that fail to load.

If you run a search from "s9e twitter problem" or something along those lines it's clear this is a systematic issue across Xenforo in terms of how it's processing a certain script. Happening on message boards all over the place.

There are a number of dependencies with any of these embeds:
  • Xenforo
  • The embed add-on and its supporting infrastructure
  • The third-party content platforms and their embed code or APIs
  • Devices and browsers
The third piece is the one that creates most of these problems - every time Instagram or Twitter tweaks something about their embed code, it has the potential to break certain implementations. In our case, the s9e addon actually generates a custom container for each embed type to optimize for the Xenforo UX, enable responsive formatting, etc., so the interaction between the third-party content format and that embed container is particularly sensitive to disruption. Fixes are not always easy, especially as you’re talking about multiple layers of things that are each designed to be self-contained and independently responsive. If the innermost element is built using code that attempts to prevent an outer layer from influencing its layout, or if that inner layer tries to detect its environment to drive the appearance of content versus a “click to expand” link (e.g. Twitter), the developer needs to devise some kind of complex workaround to “trick” the inner container into acting as expected.

So, in defense of the new ownership, I sure wouldn’t be able to fix these issues any faster. :)
